When Is Sedation Dentistry Necessary?
There are many reasons why patients may benefit from sedation dentistry. This treatment is appropriate for anyone who has:

Types of Sedation
There are several types of sedation available. In dentistry, most practitioners use conscious sedation. In contrast to general anesthesia in hospital settings, patients can still communicate with their dental team if necessary – but they are much more carefree.
Also known as "laughing gas", nitrous oxide is inhaled through a nose piece. Effects are generally felt within three to five minutes. Patients who choose nitrous oxide can drive themselves to and from our Albuquerque, NM, office because the sedative can be completely flushed from the system in about 10 to 15 minutes.
Typically administered in pill form, oral sedation is given about one hour prior to the procedure. Your dentist will recommend the appropriate medication and dosage based on your medical history. Oral sedation temporarily affects cognition and motor skills, so patients will need to have a trusted driver with them.
Intravenous sedation involves delivering sedatives directly to the bloodstream. The effects are felt almost immediately and the dosage can be adjusted throughout the procedure. Like oral sedatives, patients must have someone who can drive them to and from our office, as this type of conscious sedation can affect motor skills.
